The Story Behind KoOut
Built by a parent who got tired of googling "things to do with kids near me" every weekend.
It started with a familiar question
Every Saturday morning, the same thing: "What do you want to do today?" Then 30 minutes of bouncing between Yelp, Google Maps, and random blogs trying to find something fun for a 4-year-old and a baby. By the time we'd pick something, half the morning was gone.
Why "KoOut"?
My wife has this thing where she playfully adds "Ko" before our kids' names. One day it clicked. "Ko" + "Out" = KoOut. A little nod to our family's inside joke, and a reminder of what it's all about: getting out there and making memories with your kids.
So I built the thing I wished existed
There are sites out there that list family activities, but they're often packed with ads and so much information that you spend just as long filtering through them. KoOut keeps it simple. Browse by age, budget, neighborhood, indoor or outdoor. Ask the AI assistant for ideas. See what other parents are recommending. No ads, no clutter, just the stuff that actually helps you get out the door.
What KoOut is about
Less screens, more memories
Helping families put the phones down and go do something together.
Support local
The Bay Area is full of amazing small businesses, parks, and hidden gems that deserve more foot traffic.
Parents helping parents
The best recommendations come from other families. That's why anyone can submit an activity.
A little about me
I'm Phil, a support engineer by day, parent of two kids under five by always. I built KoOut as a side project because I wanted weekends to be less about planning and more about doing. When we're not testing out activities for the site, you'll probably find us at a park somewhere with a picnic blanket and way too many snacks.
Help KoOut grow
KoOut is a community effort. If you know a great spot your kids love, submit it. It takes less than a minute. The more parents share, the better this gets for everyone.
